It traces its origins to its reference as Indraprastha in the Indian mythological epic Mahabharata. Archaeological excavations reveal that the city has been in existence since the times of the Mauryans (300 BC), through the days of the Sultanate, Rajput, Gupta, Saka-Kushan and Sunga periods.
